| Description | There are no details given on this engraving of Culross Abbey, Fife. The drawing was completed standing in the north, looking to the north-east, which is a relatively unusual view. There are a further two images of Culross in amongst the Hutton Collection which together give a rounded impression of the abbey and town. Culross Abbey was founded in 1218 by Malcolm, 7th Earl of Fife. It established itself as a small Cistercian monastery, which is probably best-remembered as the birthplace and school of St Kentigern. The area also has associations with St Serf. At its height, the abbey had a first class reputation for its scriptorium and the binding and illuminations it produced, as well as for its gardens. |
