| Description | This drawing shows Rosyth Castle in Fife, which is located in the town's navy dockyards by the River Forth. The anonymous drawing of the castle was made in 1784, and appeared in volume I of Captain Francis Grose's book, 'The Antiquities of Scotland', which was published in 1791. Rosyth Castle was built sometime during the thirteenth century, and is closely associated with two of Scotland's most famous families, the Stewarts and the Wardlaws. As the drawing's title indicates, Rosyth Castle is most famous as being the birthplace of Elizabeth Cromwell, the mother of Oliver, in or around 1564. |
