| Description | A plan of the route of a Roman road in Angus and Aberdeenshire, the artist was 'Joan' Jamieson and the date of the engraving 1785. A handwritten note at the top of the sheet reads 'Gough's Camden, Vol. 3 Pl. 30'. This gives the source of the plate as Richard Gough's 1789 translation of 'Britannia', written by the historian and antiquary William Camden and first published in 1586. The road shown here was probably the main Roman route north, although the artist's geography does not correspond with modern thinking on Roman Scotland. The camp of Battledykes was slightly north of Forfar, while 'Haerfauds' was probably Hallforest, near Kintore on the south bank of the River Don. |
