| Description | This sheet does not carry a title, but contains sketches of two heraldic symbols, each accompanied by explanatory notes. Beneath the drawings, Hutton has added a note, which reads: 'Recd. (2d Decr. 1820) from Mr William Mitchell, Mason, Coupar Angus, with his plan of the abbey'. In another drawing in his collection, Hutton has referred to the same man as Mr John Mitchell, so doubt remains over which was his name. The notes that accompany these sketches are not clear, but the top sketch appears to be a coat of arms that belonged to the Campbell family, who were Dukes of Greenock. It says that the Campbell's title and coats of arms have subsequently altered. The engravings may have been included in the abbey's masonry as dedications to people and families that had been benefactors of the Coupar Cistercians. |
