| Description | Side view of Melrose Abbey, Roxburghshire. It is most probable that Hutton himself copied this sketch from the architect Edward Blore's (1790-1879) original. Blore is most famous for completing Buckingham Palace after John Nash was dismissed from his post, following George IV's death in 1830. Melrose Abbey is one of the most famous abbeys in Scotland, and certainly its ruins are among the most beautiful to be found anywhere in the country. Founded in 1136 by David I, it was settled by monks of the Cistercian Order and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The heart of Robert the Bruce is buried in the nave, and many of the Douglas family are interred there. |
