| Description | This pencil drawing, although unsigned and undated, was probably made by George Henry Hutton. It shows the interior of the ruins of Melrose Abbey in the Scottish Borders. Melrose Abbey was founded by King David I in 1136. It was the earliest Cistercian monastery in Scotland, and became one of the wealthiest. Like many ecclesiastical buildings located around the border with England, it was attacked several times by marauding troops. The English sacked the abbey in 1322, 1385 and 1545, after which it never recovered. |

Drawings date mostly from 1781-1792 and 1811-1820. Arranged by county. Some drawings by George Henry Hutton, a professional soldier and amateur antiquary, who compiled the collection. |
