| Description | This is a drawing of the ruins of Inchcolm Abbey on Inchcolm Island in the Firth of Forth. Much of what you see is still extant today. The buildings immediately visible in the centre of the image are the ruins of the sacristy and directly behind it to the left is the still-complete chapter house. The ruins at Inchcolm are the best-preserved medieval male monastic ruins in Britain. David I founded the buildings on Inchcolm, many of which, the tower included, are still intact, in 1223. One of David's policies was to regularise and officially endorse many of Scotland's ecclesiastical establishments, and he was heavily involved in issuing foundation charters. Despite this, the community of Augustinian canons had been living on the island since their invitation in 1123 by Alexander I. |
