| Description | This picture is one of two views of the ruins, of Inchcolm Abbey, on the island. The other one is dated 1784 but there is no artist attached to either. The building at the front centre of the image houses the dormitories on the second floor and storage rooms underneath. The cloisters were directly behind this building. Alexander I invited the Augustinian canons onto the island in 1123, when the hermits sheltered him there after a shipwreck. The island, however, has a much older ecclesiastical history, and is known as the Iona of the east. As the island's name implies it has associations with St Columba. In the intervening years, many members of Danish descent were buried here. |

Drawings date mostly from 1781-1792 and 1811-1820. Arranged by county. Some drawings by George Henry Hutton, a professional soldier and amateur antiquary, who compiled the collection. |
