| Description | This drawing may be by William Daniell, sketched during his island stay in 1818. There are a further two interior sketches attributed to him. The interior design of the Cathedral has always stirred interest amongst researchers due to the similarities with both Durham Cathedral and Dunfermline Abbey. The sophistication of the scheme also places Orkney in the heart of European fashion and political awareness. During the Cromwellian wars the English government built two forts at the harbour mouth, as Cromwell was worried about the strength of royalist support on the island. The town at this time, and until the reclamation of the Peerie Sea, enjoyed one long main axis road, with the area split into three districts – Burgh, Midtown and Laverock. The town also enjoyed the attentions of the aristocracy as many built fine town houses so they could winter over in relative comfort. |
