| Description | William Daniell may have drawn this sketch, possibly during his sojourn on the island in 1818. Daniell made three sketches of the interior of the Cathedral although there are a further eight views of the building held in the Hutton Drawings. The eighteenth century had seen very little expansion or progression in Kirkwall as developments tended to focus on the more popular fishing village of Stromness. The nineteenth century, however, saw much of the natural Peerie Sea harbour reclaimed so that the town could expand. Money went into two new piers – East and West – and a new connecting road between them, for improved access. This resulted in the bottom-half of the town’s more modern architectural look. |
