| Description | This drawing, of a monument in Kilmun Collegiate Church, Argyllshire, dates from August 1802, but is unsigned. The significance of this monument is not on the sheet, but it is probably the tomb of the Black Knight of Loch Awe and his consort, which is in the vault of the church. The Black Knight of Loch Awe was a name given to Sir Duncan Campbell, chief of the Clan Campbell and an ancestor of the ducal family of Argyll. Campbell founded Kilmun Collegiate Church in 1442 on the burial place of his son Celestine, who had died about 1440. Thereafter the churchyard at Kilmun became the last resting place of the Campbell chiefs and the Dukes of Argyll. |
