| Description | Another print in which someone has scored out the word 'church' from the title and replaced it with 'abbey'. It shows the abbey ruins from the north and was executed by A. Rutherford in 1777. The print could be purchased from J. Ainslie of Edinburgh and is one of three by Rutherford in the Hutton Collection. Jedburgh Abbey was founded in the early-twelfth century by King David I. Originally a priory, it soon achieved abbey status and was populated by Augustinian canons from the abbey of St Quentin, at Beauvais, France. Due to the abbey's close proximity to the English border, it was the scene of much fighting between the Scots and the English and suffered repeated attacks throughout the centuries. |
