| Description | Someone has scored out the word 'church' from the title and replaced it with 'abbey' in this print. It shows the abbey ruins from the north-east and is by A. Rutherford, 1775. J. Ainslie of Edinburgh sold the print. Jedburgh Abbey is located on the north bank of the Jed Water, Jedburgh. King David I founded it as a priory in the early-twelfth century. Soon after was elevated to the status of an abbey. Home to a community of Augustinian canons and dedicated to St Mary, Jedburgh Abbey was one of four great abbeys built in the Scottish Borders during the Middle Ages: the others being Melrose Abbey, Kelso Abbey and Dryburgh Abbey. |
