| Description | This watercolour painting is by 'Capt. Grose's assistant', i.e. Thomas Cocking. It is dated '1747 or 1748', and is one of four views of Hamilton Collegiate Church contained in the Hutton Collection. 'Capt. Grose', who’s assistant is credited, as the artist of the painting, is a reference to Francis Grose (c.1731-91), like Hutton an English soldier and antiquary, and the author of books on the antiquities of Scotland, England and Wales. Hamilton Palace was the seat of the Dukes of Hamilton, and was begun in the late-eighteenth century in the grounds of Cadzow Castle, family home of the Barons of Cadzow who were ancestors of the Hamiltons. The collegiate church had been founded on an adjoining site in 1450-1, but apart from the transept shown in this painting, was demolished in the eighteenth century as Hamilton Palace was extended to become one of the grandest stately homes in Britain. The Palace was itself demolished in 1922 after subsidence caused by mine workings had rendered it unsafe. |
