| Description | A fainter note directly after the title of this drawing reads, 'Since removed'. The artist is not named, although it is likely that it was Hutton himself. This is the only drawing or sketch of Lesmahagow Priory contained in the Hutton Collection. Hutton's note can be dated to after 1803, as this is when the priory was demolished. Lesmahagow Priory was founded around AD 1140 by King David I of Scotland and John, Bishop of Glasgow. The priory was affiliated to Kelso Abbey, and as such was inhabited by monks of the Tironesian Order. Despite being burned by English troops in 1335, the abbey continued to thrive until the Reformation of 1560, when it was largely demolished. The nave and tower were retained and used as a parish church until 1803. |
