X— THE MAXWELLS OF TINWALD IN THE COUNTY OF DUMFRIES,
AND OF MONEEITH IN THE COUNTY OF WIGTON.
I.— SIR EDWARD MAXWELL, first of the Maxwells of Tinwald. He was the second son of Herbert, first Lord Maxwell ;
married Margaret Douglas, and had by her a son. — [History of the Maxwell Family, etc.]
II. — Edward Maxwell of Tinwald. Edward Maxwell married, before 8th May 1455, Margaret, one of the four daughters and heirs-
portioners of Heury Munduele of Tinwald ; and on that date Margaret, as his wife, was infefted in the fourth part of the lands of
Tinwald. Edward Maxwell afterwards acquired the remaining three-fourth parts of these lands — one on 18th January 1481, another
on 1st November 1483, and also the other fourth part. On 18th January 14S1 he acquired the lands of the barony of Monreith, fin
the resignation of Alexander Conynghame of Aikhead and Janet Knox, his spouse. — [Monreith Charter-chest.] By his wife, Margaret,

III. — Herbert Maxwell, younger of Tinwald. On 1st November 14S3, Robert Boyd of Arneil renounced to Herbert and his father
Edward all right which he had in the lands of Tinwald, the Temple lauds of Dalgarnock, and others. — [Ibid. p. 8, No. 42.] Herbert
predeceased his father before 3d November 1495. His wife's name has not been ascertained. He left two sods.

IV. — 1. Edward Maxwell of Tinwald, who
succeeded his grandfather. In sasine of John
Maxwell of Pollok, dated 3d November 1495,
this Edward is described as grandson and
heir-apparent of Edward Maxwell of Tiu-
wald.— [Pollok Book, vol. i. p. 217.] He
died before the year 1518, leaving a son.
IV. — 2. William Maxwell, who was tutor to his nephew, Edward Maxwell of Tinwald.
He is mentioned under this designation as one of the arbiters in a decreet of division
of debateable lands between Carnsalloch and some lands belonging to the burgh ol
Dumfries, dated 12th January 1518. — [Decreet at Kenmure and in burgh of Dum-
fries.] He possessed the lands of Blairbuie, part of Monreith, and is hence styled
William Maxwell of Blairbuie [Drumlanrig Inventory] ; and on 30th May 1542 he
received a charter of the Temple lands of Dalgarno [ibid.]. He had two sons.

-Edward, who succeeded him, and V. — Edward, who in 1522 possessed Mr. Herbert Maxwell. He also married his cousin,
whose uncle, William, was tutor to
him during his minority, in 1518.
He died e. 1540, leaving two
daughters.
Tinwald Line.
the church lands of Tinwald, and
married his cousin, Elizabeth Max-
well, eldest daughter of Edward
Maxwell of Tinwald. He died be-
fore 1566.
Margaret Maxwell, younger daughter of Edward
Maxwell of Tinwald, in August 1541. They ob-
tained a dispensation for their marriage, being
related in the second and third degrees of con-

Monreith Line.
VI. — Elizabeth Maxwell, Lady Tinwald. She was infefted in
the half of the lands of Tinwald on 29th October 1540, and in
half of the lands of Monreith on 7th April 1541, and by arrange-
ments afterwards made, she received as her portion the whole
lands of Tinwald. She married, first, her cousin, Edward
Maxwell, son of William Maxwell, tutor of Tinwald ; and
secondly, before 1566, Sir Robert Maxwell of Dinwoodie, with-
out issue. By the former, she had three sons.

VII.— Edward Maxwell of Tinwald.
In 1546 his aunt, Margaret Maxwell,
Lady Monreith, destined her lands to
him, failing her son John of her first
marriage. In the deed of settlement
he is styled eldest son of Edward
Maxwell of Tinwald. He had a son.
VIII. — William Maxwell of Tinwald.
On 13th August 1589, as heir-appar-
ent of Tinwald, he received a Crown-
charter of Bracoch, and was infeft
therein 25th September the same
year. He married Nicholas, daughter
of John Charteris of Amisfield.

served heir to Edward Maxwell
of Tinwald, " abavi ex parte
matris," and to Sir Edward Max-
well of Tinwald, " attavi ex
parte matris," on 2d June 1630.

Married Agnes, one of three
daughters and heirs-portioners of
Robert Maxwell of Dinwoodie,
and had a son.

Robert Maxwell of Tinwald, who
was served heir to his father on
26th November 1647. He mar-
ried Elizabeth, daughter of Sir
Robert Grierson of Lag, and had
a son. He was killed in 1651.
Margaret Maxwell, Lady Monreith, in parish of Kirkmaiden, now
united to Glasserton. She was infefted in the half of Tinwald on
29th October 1540, and in half of Monreith on 7th April 1541.
By a subsequent arrangement she received Monreith as her
portion. She resigned Monreith into the hands of the Crown for
new infeftment to Lord Maxwell. — [Monreith Charters.] She
married, first, as above stated, her cousin, Mr. Herbert Maxwell ;
and secondly, George Maxwell, burgess of Dumfries. By her
first husband she had one son, John. By her second husband
she had Robert of Garrerie and Edward.

Herbert Maxwell of Temp-
land. He was also proprietor
of Shaws of Tinwald, and
Kilbean, and was frequently
designated from these lands.
He was chamberlain to Ro-
bert Earl of Nitbsdale c.
1628. He married Sarah
Kirkpatrick, and had a son.
John Maxwell of Templand,
mentioned as such in a dis-
charge to John Lord Hemes,
12th May 1623. -He married
Jean Stirling of Friars Carse,
and had

John Maxwell of Monreith.
He married Agnes Mac-
Culloch, and had three
sons — John, Robert, and
Gavin. Died before 1605.

John Maxwell. On 20th
October 1605 he was in-
fefted as heir of John Max-
well, who was son and heir
of Margaret Maxwell, Lady
of Monreith. He died in
January 1630. He married
Catherine Maxwell of Gar-
