John Maxwell, first of Broomholni, was great-grandson of Robert Maxwell, second son of John, third Lord Maxwell, who
died in 1484. Married Elizabeth Scott of Hartwood.— [Disposition of Arkinholm, 4th February 1628.] They had

Living 1796. They had a number of sons, who were in the service of the Hon. East India Company, and in com-
mercial employments. Most of these sons predeceased their father, who died in 1806. Three sons who survived him were
