John Maxwell of Pollok to William Cuningham, younger of
Craigends.
Pollok, 17 November 1679.
340. Sir, your ouue desyre, without the asistance of any better, as yee say, would
undoubtedly had that weight with me as to have made me waite on yow ; but
the truth is, my oune privat busines, of very great concernment, quhich my
sisters could tell yee at meeting, and contract being to be perfyted this week,
hinders me, that by noe means I can gett the duetie performed I owe to that
' noble person yee wryte of. But as for the other concern, what money I gott I
delyvered to Halcraige, together with the half of what I was appoynted for my
self, and took his receipt, quhich yee may comand, and I shall give him his
receipt. Sir, yee know the persons frae whom it was gott better then I ; yee
know alse weell who is deficient ; wherof truely I am ashamed, and shall be
willing to follow any course, any other gentlemen of my coate takes, to make up
the none payments. And if yee judge it absolutely necessar I shoidd come in,
upon your returne by the Pasley poast, I shall waite on yow without faile the
begining of the nixt week. So I intreat yee may not misconstruct my dis-
obeyeing of yours, and that my affectionat service and kyndnes may be pre-
sented to your ladie as the reall duettie of, Sir,

341. Cusing, I observe by a number of lettres from Sir William Stewart yee sent
me inclosed by yours of the 4th of September last, what care yee have been at
in my busines, for which I returne yow thanks ; but it seemes by one of Sir
William's, the 2 2d of Apryll 1676, he hath given yow bond for the moriey at
