William Cuningham, younger of Craigends, to John Maxwell of Pollok.
Edinburgh, 11 November 1679.
339. Sir, it was very much marvelled at your not being heir last week. I thought
yow otherwyse minded when I was with you ; but if other pressing occasions
have diverted, who can blame you ? Only now let me desire yow, and that not
from my self, but in the name of others whose call may deservedly have more
' weight, that yow would come to this place the beginning of the next week, if
not sooner, prepared to give attendanc in the company of the Duke of Hamil-
ton, at the reception of his Royall Higlmesse, who is, by the generaU voice of
this place, expected about the end of the next week ; and Hamilton is to meet
his friends heir, (whom he hes written for) upon Tuesday, this day 8 days. Sir,
take not this as coming of my self, nor of any else whose judgment I thought
you would slight : and if yet remaining under doubt, yow suspend taking con-
clusion till yow be better acquainted with the giver of the advice, yow may yet.
(at my requeest), hazard the pains of coming hither, where yow may be satisfied
in that. Especially seing I am also desired by that same hand, that advised the
other, to advertish yow and other friends concerned in that particular, that yow
were to have been hen upon last week of a meeting intended anent it imme-
diatly after his highnesse coming hen ; and therfor earnestly to desire yow, not
only to be present your self, but also to advertish others as I advertish yow.
And if yow desire furder clearing anent what I write, seek occasion of Killma-
heugh, who will informe yow fully. I rest, Sir,
