284 FAMILY AND DOMESTIC LETTERS. [1654.
Elizabeth Beaumont, Countess of Nithisdaill, to Sir George Maxwell
of Pollok, 16th February 1654.
283. Sir, since I can not haue the happienes to sie yow in this contrie, I must im-
portune yow by letters, as one in whose wosdome and affection to my selff and
my son I remane most confident. My Lord, my husband, hade a tack of the
teenths off the church off Trequere in Galloway from the Colledge off Glasgo,
whereoff theie be as yet som yeares standing : and now, as I ame informed,
Mr. John Blakater, present minister off the sayd church, is putting in to haue
the sayd teenth in his oune hande. Wherefore, I shall earnestly intreat, as
yow wish the goode off my son, yow will stop his proceedings heere in, since
my sone is now for many yeares by past in possession, and willing to continue
in paye for the sayd teenths as his predecessors hath been ; and if any things
els shall be requisit, hee shall submitt to yow therein. Thus, not doubting off
youre goodewill, I rest as euer,

2K4. Loving and kynd brother, I receaved yors, which wes direct to my mother,
wherin yow desyred that I should wryt and acquaint yow what wes done in
my bussines. I told yow befor that I wes decerned to pay 5 pund sterling of
fyne ; bot sensyne I gave in ane bill and meined myself to them, showing that
I wes not liable to pay the said fyne, in reguaird my freinds had rejectit me,
