242 FAMILY AND DOMESTIC LETTERS. [1633.
Dame Grissell Blair, to her husband, Sir John Maxwell of Pollok,
[June 1633.]
239. Sir, I haue no neus to wryt bot that I come to the toun one Munonday at tua
efter none, and the King did go to the Castell, and was than all that night ;
and on Tysday morning, the King and many of all his nobilitie cam ryding
doune to the abay in thair robes with ane grit schaw. I heir he lyks this king-
dom werie weill, and sueirs he thinks it littill inferior to any vther pairt. Ze
heir that thair ar many Lords, Erls, and sum Marcjueis to mak. I wisst ze had
beine heir bot ane hour, to haue sein the sho that was heir ; bot I pray youe
hald yourself merie w[h]ill I cum hame. I hau not sein non of my freinds zett,
bot they werie many knows I ame heir ; quhairfor I think I will be forcit to go
sie them, bot I sail be as chaep as I may. I pray zow wryt to me if ze haue
occasion, quhilk will do me werie grit contentment, and sail remain,
Zour's euer to be comandit,

Lady Elizabeth Douglas, relict of John Earl of Mortoun, Lord Maxwell,
and mother of Robert first Earl of Nithisdaill, to Sir John Maxwell of
Pollok, 11th July 1633.
240. Honorabill and assurit freind, I hawe thocht gud to schaw zow that I mynd,
God willing, to be with zow about Lammes, and hes writtin to Robert Miller
and to my officer to wairne sua maney horsmen as I hawe appointit, and sume
cariage men, to be heir at me the fyft of Agust. The Kingis Maiestie gois to
Dalkeith the morne, being Fryday, and beis vpon Setterday and Sonday al day
in Seitowne, and fra that furth takis journay. The Lord tak his Maiestie weil
