former trust you haue had in thes bussines and of your deutifull discharge
therof, expecting you will taik the best course you can for advancing our said
seruice after this manner, and to advertease us of suche of the saides persones
who by the effects haue schouen, or sail scho, their affection therunto, we bid you

21. Right trusty and right welbeloued cousin and counsellour ; right trustie and
welbeloued cousins and counsellouris ; and right trustie and welbeloued coun-
sellouris, wee greete you well. Whereas vpon considerationes knowen vnto vs,
wee did grant vnto our right trustie and welbeloued Cousin and Counsellour,
the Eaiie of Nithisdale, the guift of his liferent and escheate, and haue been
pleased of late to signe vnto Sir John Maxwell of Neither Pollock, a guift of
his, in respect the same did fall at the disposing of the said Earle, as superior
of his landes, by his remaning in rebellion, as suretie for him : To the effect
that no further vse be made by the said Sir John of any benefite that may
arrise to the said Earle, by the falling of Sir John his liferent and escheate in
his handes, then in so farr as he hath suffered by being suretie for the said
Earle ; our pleasure is, if he, or any in his name, shall mak it appeare that this
guift may be further extended then to secure the said Sir John from all danger
of horninges, as cautioner for the said Earle, that the same be renewed accord-
ing as is hereby truely intended, and thereafter to be past and exped the seales
there ; but if nothing shalbe made appeare contrarie to what is alleadged by
the said Sir John, that yow cause exped this guift with all convenient diligence :
For doing whereof these presents shall be your sufficient warrant. From our
court att Whythall, the second clay of Junij 1630.
