24. James Duke of Chatelherault, Earl of Arran, and other Lords of Privy Council, to Sir John
Maxwell of Pollok, desiring him to come to them at Glasgow. Glasgow, 4th March 1559,... 21
25. James Duke of Chatelherault, Earl of Arran, etc., Regent of Scotland, to Sir John Blaxwell
of Pollok, desiring him to repair to Glasgow with his kin, friends, and servants, on the 26th
of the current month, with 30 days' victuals, to pass thence to meet with friends from Eng-
land, with the view of expelling the French from the country. Glasgow, 23d March 1559, 22
26. The Same to the Same, intimating that, in consequence of the disloyal and oppressive conduct
of the Lord Semple, he had been denounced as a rebel, and requesting Sir John to repair to
Glasgow on the 30th of the current month, with his friends and servants, to meet the
Regent's son, who had been sent by the Privy Council to reduce Castle Semple, which the
owner and " certane waigerons" were holding out against the Government. Edinburgh,

27. The Earls of Atholl, Mortoun, Glencarn, Mar, and Lord Sanquhar, to Sir John Maxwell of
Pollok, intimating their determination to bring to punishment the murderers of the late King
(Darnley), and to free the Queen (Mary) from the slander and bondage to which she had
been subjected through the conduct of the Earl of Bothwell, and requesting him to repair
forthwith to Edinburgh to assist there with his advice and counsel in furtherance of these

of the arrival at Leith of the Master of Gray's uncle, and others, from London, with indifferent
news ; and that he had had an agreeable conference with the Earl of Angus regarding his
Lordship's affairs ; and likewise with reference to an amicable arrangement of matters be-
