16. King James VI. to John Spottiswoode, Archbishop of Glasgow, requiring him to search out and
commit to custody all Jesuits, seminary priests, etc., within the bounds of his own jurisdic-
tion, and if necessary to make the King's keys open all houses known to harbour such per-
sons. Westminster, 11th April 1606, 12
17. King James VI. to the Bishops of Scotland, in reply to a communication from them regarding
the new Confession of Faith, and the appointment of a Chaplain to the Lords of Session ;
wherein his Majesty expresses his favourable opinion respecting the former, and, with refer-
ence to the latter, adheres to his resolution intimated to them in a former letter, desiring
them to persuade the ministers to concur in the appointment of the said chaplain, and the
Lords of Session to devise means for his maintenance. His Majesty likewise intimates to
them that, in accordance with their request, he had given them Sir James Sempill for their

18. King James VI. to George Gladstanes, Archbishop of St. Andrews, wherein his Majesty
expresses his satisfaction with the citizens of St. Andrews on account of a recent compliance
with his pleasure ; and, after recommending to his care and diligence the management of
the business, and the supervision of the conduct of the clergy, at an approaching meeting
of the synod of his diocese, recommends the bearer of his letter to the Archbishop's favour,
with a request that he would put him in possession of the glebe attached to the Archdeanery

19. The Same to the Same, wherein his Majesty requests him to examine into the reason of the
absence of some of the clergy from a recent meeting of Synod held at Haddington, to
censure them if necessary, and to inform his Majesty of the result of his enquiries; expresses
his satisfaction at Mr. William Cowper's acceptance of the Bishopric of Galloway, and charges
the Archbishop, in conjunction with the Archbishop of Glasgow and the Bishop of Dunkeld,
to make an arrangement for the support of the widow and children of the former Bishop ; and
further, requires the Archbishop, as Chancellor of the University of St. Andrews, to see that
the Library of that Institution be placed where most convenient for all concerned. Wan-

tion, as Commissioners of the shires to serve in Parliament, of such persons as are well

21. King Charles I. to the Commissioners of Exchequer in Scotland to pass through the seals the
gift to Sir John Maxwell of Pollok of his liferent and escheat, which had fallen in the dis-
posal of the Earl of Nithsdale, to the extent of value to which Sir John was caution for the
