Sect. V. — Miscellaneous References (Scottish Records). 1 ^ rt V J-
I add finally, for the sake of completeness, some stray references to various isolated individuals, of most
of whom I can give very little account.

died at Edinburgh 31 Dec. 1858. (Edin. Reg. House.)
John Wedderburn, at Belhaven, near Dunbar, 1828 (R.H. 50). See below s. John Wedderburn
in Dunbar.
John Wedderburn, in Budal, co. Northumberland. See post, p. 499.
John Wedderburn, in Dunbar, said to have been his father's only child, and to have been born in
Dunbar about 1798, died in 1848, and was buried at Dunbar. He is, I suppose, the "John Wedder-
burn, shopman in Dalkeith," returned heir general to his uncle, John Wedderburn at Belhaven, near
Dunbar, 20 Oct. 1828 (R.H. 50). He married at Kirkcaldy, Mary Heyrie, and by her had issue an only
child,
James Heyrie Wedderburn, born at Dunbar, 12 Sept. 1842. He was a farmer in Fife till 1878 ;
but later (1886) went out to Africa. He married at Cabbage Hall, Leslie, Fife, 27 Dec. 1865, Eliza
Graham Fyffe Dochard (daughter to Peter Dochard of Cabbage Hall), and by her, living 1886 —
1891, at 16, Marchmont Road, and afterwards at Braid Crescent, Edinburgh, had issue, a son and
a daughter : —
John Wedderburn, born 27 Oct. 1866 at Bankhead of Pitteuchar, Kinglassie, co. Fife, and
there baptized. Living 1891, on a sheep farm N.S. Wales. I do not know if he is
responsible for the names Wedderburn, East and North-East, given to certain mining
leases of 3,508 and 13,567 acres each, and mentioned as "recently taken up" in the
British Australian of 11 June 1896, p. 912.
Sophia Mary, born at Bankhead, 27 March 1872, and there baptized.
[This account is from information supplied by Mrs. J. H. Wedderburn. Her marriage and
the births of her two children are, of course, registered in Scotland.]
John Wedderburn, in Kelso, 1706-9. He married Agnes Turner, and had three daughters, all
born and baptized at Kelso, viz., Margaret, 14-15 Oct. 1706 ; Grizle, 17-21 Dec. 1707 ; and Elizabeth,
10-11 Dec. 1709 (Kelso Par. Reg.). See R.D. 182.
John Wedderburn, in co. Roxburgh, 1575. I have a note of an action of removing in 1575 by
Archibald, Earl of Angus, v. his tenants in Jedburgh Forest, Roxburgh, including Sir Andrew Ainslie, in
Cleithauch, John Wedderburn and Robert Wedderburn in Nunnislaw (? Wannislaw), and John Wedderburn,
also there (R.A.D. 15).
To this we may add another entry a generation later, 1611, when a later Earl of Angus brings a
similar action v. various defendants, including John Wedderburn and David Wedderburn, both in
MerviDgnlaw, co. Roxburgh (R.A.D. 56).
Margaretta Wedderburn, authoress of a small volume of verse entitled " Mary, Queen of Scots,
An Historical Poem, with other Miscellaneous Pieces," Edin. 1811. The copy of this book in the British
Museum bears a pencil note by the authoress, dated 9, Catharine Street, Pimlico, 24 June 1813, bequeath-
ing the book to a Mr. Tasse.
I have not been able to trace her parentage, but the verses, which contain many personal allusions,
give some information. Both her parents were natives of Scotland ; her mother died when she was six,
and her father remarried, but was again left a widower in May 1810. He was living iu England in old
age and straitened circumstances in 1811. The writer speaks of leaving Scotland, especially Dalkeith and
Loughton (the scenes of her education and youth), in order to join her father. She also speaks of having come
to Edinburgh for her health, though she had no relatives there, and stayed there six years, 1805-11(?) It
seemr that on her mother's death she became " an absentee from natal home," apparently near Hampstead
or Highgate, which are named as "scenes of youth," Sisters are mentioned, but no brothers, and the loss,
when the authoress was 23, of a " much loved youth, Edwy," is deplored. He was probably her
fiance, and it may be he who is the much valued friend, who left her a small independence. There is a
portrait of her, painted by Miss Monro, and engraved by R. Scott, as a frontispiece to the volume, which
is dedicated to the " Dutchess of Buccleuch."
1 The references to the Edinburgh Register House in this list exhaust the results of the search there

born ibid., 1877 ; James Ewen Wedderburn, born ibid., 18S4 ; Thomas Wedderburn, born at
Glasgow, 1877, died there, 1878 ; Matthew Wedderburn, born at Maryhill, 1878, died there, 1879 ;
