Thefe bearings fo ftrongly refemble thofe of Sir Richard
Sutton, co-founder with Bifhop Smith of Brazenofe College,
and which occur together with the chevron and rofes (No. 5)
of that prelate on the feal of Brazenofe, that it feems to me
the recorder of them 1 erroneoufly attributed them to Smith
inftead of Sutton. Sutton's arms were — Quarterly, ift and
4th, Argent, a chevron between three bugle-horns ftringed
fable, for Sutton ; 2nd and 3rd, Argent, a chevron between three
croffes crofslet, for Samfbury. William Smith being Bifhop of
Lincoln may perhaps account for their being attributed to Smith
of Lincolnjhire.
Smith of EJJex. Sable, a chevron between fix
croffes crofllet fitchee or.
Smith of Harwich, EJfex. The fame, but the field
gules, and the croffes argent.
Smith, Thomas, Biflwp of Carlijle, 1684-1702. Or,
a chevron between three croffes pattee fitchee fable.
To him is alfo afcribed — Sable, three bars or, in chief three
croffes pattee fitchee of the fecond. (No. 61.)
John Smith of Northampton/hire. Argent, on a
chevron gules, between three erodes crofslet (or flory)
fable, as many cinquefoils of the field (pi. xi. fig. 3).
In margin of MS. " Smith of Northumberland," Mr. Pap-
worth gives the coat with crofs-crofslets to Smith of Norfolk.
