(Stodart adds: "Died at Chatham, 12th April 1798, John, eldest son of
late Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick.")
HnitS of Innerwick in Valentine Jenkins' Collection, N.D. (Stodart). — Gules,
a /ess chequy argent and azure, in chief a buckle betweeti two cinque/oils,
and a third cinquefoil in base argent. 1 702. — Gules, a fess chequy argent
and azure between three cinquefoils ermine, a bordure of the last cliarged
with eight buckles of the third (Nisbet). [Plate VII., fig. 11.] In Pout's
MS., 1624. — Gules, a fess chequy argent and azure between tliree ci?iquefoils
ermine, differenced with a crescent ; some have a buckle in chief argent.

(583) Sir James Hamilton of Hoprig, second son of Sir Alexander Hamilton
(No. 578). He married Anne, daughter of Sir Thomas Otterburne of
Redhall, and had : —
(a) Sir James Hamilton of Redhall, died s.p., and was succeeded
by his brother : —
(b) Andrew Hamilton of Redhall, died before 1679. Married
Janet, daughter of Sir Alexander Hay of Fosterseat.
He sold Redhall 1672. He left a son : —
(584) James Hamilton of Ballencrieff, died 21st February 1687. Will re-
corded nth March 1687 (Edinburgh). He was served heir to his father
19th July 1679. He married, at Edinburgh, 4th June 1683, Margaret,
daughter of Thomas Nicholson of Carnock, and had : —
(585) Alexander Hamilton of Ballencrieff, died 1763. Married Mary Ker,
daughter of William, second Marquis of Lothian. She died 17th Novem-
ber 1768, having had : —
(a) William Henry Hamilton, died young.
(b) James (No. 586).
(c) Major Alexander Hamilton, died 1786, leaving: —
(1) Lieutenant-Colonel Alexander Hamilton, C.B.
(d) Colonel Archibald Hamilton, died 1795. He married Alice,
daughter of Alexander Colden, and had : —
(1) Major-General Alexander Mark Ker Hamilton.
(e) Robert Hamilton, died young.
(586) James Hamilton of Ballencrieff, died 1798. He was served heir to his
elder brother, William Henry Hamilton, 26th November 1764. He
sold Ballencrieff, and married Miss Daes, and had : —
(587) Alexander James Hamilton. Married Mary, daughter of Richard Dean,
of New York, and had : —
(a) Alexander Hamilton.
(b) Archibald Hamilton.
(c) Mark Ker Hamilton.
