In Lyon Office, 1734, to Alexander Hamilton, alias Inglis, descended from
Inverdovat. — 1 and 4. Azure, a lion rampant argent, in chief three mullets
of the second (Inglis of Fingask). 2. Gules, three cinquefoils ermine within
a bordure embattled or (Hamilton). 3. Argent, a chevron sable between
three boars' heads erased gules, armed of the second (Elphinstone of Inver-
dovat). [Plate VI., fig. 8.] Crest : A demi lion argent, armed and
langued gules, grasping in his dexter paw an oak branch slipped proper.
MOTTO : "Invictus manu."
Blanterferme.
Authority — House of Hamilton.
This family, according to Nisbet, was a cadet of Borland.
(488) Thomas Hamilton of Fremblantyre was father of: —
(489) William Hamilton, who had sasine of lands of West Barns, Haddington,
26th April 1475. The next is : —
(490) William Hamilton of Blanterferme or Blantyrefarm, who had
charter of these lands 10th March 1542. He and his brother, Patrick,
had a remission for siding with the Earl of Lennox, 1551. He was
succeeded by his son : —
(491) William Hamilton of Blanterferme, who had sasine of his lands 16th
December 1569, and also a charter 20th October 1580. He was followed
by his son : —
(492) Gavin Hamilton of Blanterferme. Will recorded 1st March 1603
(Edinburgh). He married Margaret Hamilton, and had : —
(493) William Hamilton of Blanterferme. Will recorded 20th November
1 66 1 (Glasgow). He was served heir to his grandfather, William
Hamilton, 3rd May 1606. He married Jean, daughter of Sir Robert
Cunninghame of Gilbertfield, and had : —
(494) John Hamilton of Blanterferme. Will recorded 9th December 1675
(Glasgow). In 1665 he was appointed one of the curators of Patrick
Hamilton of Nielsland. He married, 1654, Margaret, daughter of James
Hamilton of Nielsland, and had : —
(a) William Hamilton, died young.
(b) James (No. 495).
(c) John Hamilton, died unmarried.
(d) William Hamilton, died unmarried 1725.
Hmi3 recorded in Lyon Office, 1672-77.- — Gules, three cinquefoils ermine
within a bordure counter indented argent and of the first. [Plate VI.,
fig. 9.] Crest : A trunk of an oak couped in pale, sprouting out two
branches proper. MOTTO : "Non deficit alter."
(495) James Hamilton of Blanterferme. Will recorded 16th May 1745 and
19th March 1746 (Glasgow). He married Lilias, daughter of James
Muirhead of Bredisholme, and had : —
(a) John Hamilton, died young.
(b) James Hamilton, died young.
