THE HAMILTONS OF UDSTON 103
(449) Robert Hamilton of Barncleuch, died January 1627. Will recorded
23rd December 1628 (Hamilton and Campsie). He was served heir to
his brother 18th February and 7th October 1615. He married a
daughter of John Hamilton of Orbiston, and was succeeded by his
elder daughter : —
(a) Margaret Hamilton, who married James (No. 327), second
son of John Hamilton of Udston.
Little Earnock.
This family is, in the House of Hamilton, said to be descended from Hamilton of
Bruntwood {see No. 443), but the connection is not given.
(450) Sir James Hamilton of Mungwell. Was father of: —
(451) JAMES HAMILTON, who married, c. 1507, Agnes Machan, heiress of Little
Earnock, and had :—
(452) Robert Hamilton of Little Earnock. He married Janet, daughter of
John Robertson of Earnock, and had : —
(453) Claud Hamilton of Little Earnock, who married, c. 1580, Alison,
daughter of John Ross of Thorntoun, and had : —
(a) John (No. 454).
(b) James (No. 461).
(c) David Hamilton, Doctor in Glasgow.
(454) John Hamilton of Little Earnock. Married his cousin, Margaret Ross
of Thorntoun, and had : —
(455) James Hamilton of Little Earnock. Married, c. 1656, Anna, daughter
of James Hamilton of Barncleuch, and had : —
(«) James (No. 456).
(b) John Hamilton. Married Anna, daughter of Rev.
Gibson of Oldhamstock, and had issue.
(c) Quintin Hamilton, died young.
(456) James Hamilton of Little Earnock. Married, c. 1687, Agnes, daughter
of Andrew Anderson.
HnilS recorded in Lyon Office — Patent 1687, Registered 1786, — Gules, a
mullet argent, between three cinque/oils ermine a chief embattled of the
second. [Plate VI., fig. 1.] CREST : A boar's head erased proper.
Motto : "Non metus."
He had :—
(457) William Hamilton of Little Earnock. Will recorded 2nd February
1750 (Edinburgh). He was served heir to his aunt, Elizabeth Anderson,
widow of John Colquhoun of Tilliechewan, 8th August 1728. He mar-
ried, about 1712, Jean, daughter of John Telfer, Bailie of Leith, and
had:—
(a) James Hamilton. Served heir to his father 21st April 1737.
He went to Russia in 1740, and died there unmarried
1750.
