He had five sons : —
(a) James (No. 221).

(c) John Hamilton, Prior of Blantyre, and, later, Provost of
Bothwell.
(d) Archibald Hamilton, living 1570.
(e) Arthur Hamilton, charged with taking part in murders of
the Regents Murray and Lennox, 15th December 1580;
and with taking part in Raid of Ruthven, 20th August
1584 (Criminal Trials).
(221) James Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh, died before 1594. He shot the
Regent Murray in Linlithgow, 21st January 1569-70. He married
Isabella, daughter and co-heiress of John Sinclair of Woodhouselee, and
had two daughters, The elder : —
(a) Alison Hamilton, sold Bothwellhaugh to her uncle (No.
222) : —
(222) David Hamilton of Monktounmains. His Will recorded 3rd May 1613
(Glasgow). He purchased Bothwellhaugh from his niece. He married
the sister of his brother's wife, Alison, daughter and co-heiress of John
Sinclair of Woodhouselee. She died 14th March 1619. Will recorded
as "relict" 27th April 1619 (Glasgow). He had issue : —
(a) David (No. 223).
(b) Claud Hamilton of Bamhill.
(223) David Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh, died before 1637, leaving a son : —
(224) James Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh. Will recorded 16th May 1650
(Glasgow). He was served heir to his grandfather 29th November 1628,
and also to his grandmother, Alison Sinclair, 20th February 1630 and
1 2th December 1643. He left an only daughter.
HtTitS. — Gules, an annulet or, stoned azure, between three cinquefoils argent

(225) Gavin Hamilton, sixth son of Gavin Hamilton (No. 176). He is mentioned
as a witness, 25th March 1529 (Hamilton MSS.). He married Janet,
relict of Thomas Pettigrew of Haggs, and had : —
(226) John Hamilton of Kirklie, who had a charter of Haggs 1 8th December 1 545.
He married Janet, daughter of Maxwell of Calderwood, and had issue : —
(a) James (No. 227).
(b) John Hamilton of Alderstoun.
(227) James Hamilton of Haggs. Mentioned 12th January 1559-60 (Hamilton
MSS.); accused of taking part in Raid of Ruthven, 20th August 1584
(Criminal Trials). He married Isabel daughter of Alexander, second
Lord Elphinstone, and had : —
(a) Alexander (No. 228).
(b) John Hamilton, living 1594.
