CHAPTER VI.
The Hamiltons of Dalzell.
Authorities — Scots Peerage, Burke's Peerage, and House of Hamilton.
(176) Gavin Hamilton, fourth son of James Hamilton of Cadzow (No. 6), died
before 29th May 1493. He became Provost of the Collegiate Church of
Bothwell. According to the House of Hamilton he married Jean Muir-
head, " the fair maid of Lechbrunnock," but being within the degrees of
consanguinity prohibited by the Church, and no dispensation having been
obtained, the marriage would not be lawful. He had the following
sons : —
(a) Thomas Hamilton, a natural son, named in the entail of
1455 made by the first Lord Hamilton (No. 7).
(b) Robert Hamilton, Canon of Glasgow, to whom
his father feued the lands of Orbiston,
along with his younger brothers.
(c) Thomas Hamilton, Canon of Dunkeld.
(d) John (No. 177).
(e) Archibald Hamilton.

(g) David Hamilton, Rector of Carstairs, legitimated 29th May
1493-
(177) John Hamilton, first of Orbiston. Married Jean Hamilton of Woodhall,
and had : —
(a) Gavin (No. 178).
(b) Archibald Hamilton, Writer in Edinburgh.
(c) John Hamilton of Ferguslee (No. 213).
(d) Patrick Hamilton.
{e) David Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh (No. 220).
(178) Gavin Hamilton of Orbiston. He is named in the entail of the Earldom
and Barony of Hamilton, 22nd October 1542 {Hamilton MSS.). He
married Helen Wallace of Cairnhill, and had : —
(a) John (No. 179).
(b) Robert Hamilton, Provost of College of St. Andrews.
(c) David Hamilton.
(d) Arthur Hamilton of Parkhead (No. 202).
(e) Archibald Hamilton.
(/) James Hamilton of Ruchbank and Kilbrackmonth (No. 207).
