(d) Alexander Hamilton, who killed his eldest brother, James.
(104) James Hamilton of Samuelston. Mentioned 22nd November 1571
{Criminal Trials). He was killed by his brother, Alexander, before 1589.
He had two sons : —
(a) John Hamilton.
(b) Patrick (No. 105).
(105) Patrick Hamilton of Samuelston, excommunicated in 1589 for slaughter
of James Aytoun, burgess of Haddington. He was retoured to his father,
James, and brother, John, 15th June 1602. His Will recorded 3rd
August 1613 (Edinburgh). He married Margaret Carkettil, and had: —
(106) William Hamilton of Samuelston, who sold the lands of Samuelston
about 1617 to Thomas, first Earl of Haddington, and died shortly after.
HVtUS recorded in Lyon Office, 1672-77, for James Hamilton, descended of
"Semelston." — Gules, a roundle, chequy argent and azure, between three
cinquefoils of the second. [Plate III., fig. 2.] CREST : A mascle or.
MOTTO : " I '11 deceive no man"

(107) John Hamilton, second natural son of James, first Lord Hamilton (No. 7),
by Janet Calderwood. On 4th February 1473-74 bis father granted him
the lands of Broomhill and Silvertonhill, with remainder to his brothers,
Patrick and David. He is named in charter of entail 17th January
1512-13, and was legitimated 20th January 1 5 12-13. He died before
1540. He married, first, Janet Hamilton, thought to be daughter of
Robert Hamilton of Preston, and had : —
{a) David (No. 108).
(b) John (No. 109).
He is said to have married, second, Margaret, daughter of Robert
Dalziel of that Ilk, and the History of the House of Hamilton gives three
other sons : —
(c) Gavin Hamilton.
(d) Quintin Hamilton.
(e) Robert Hamilton of Allanshaw, who is said to have left
descendants.
(108) David Hamilton of Broomhill, named in entail of Earldom of Arran
22nd October 1542 (Hamilton MSS.). He married Margaret, daughter
of Robert, third Lord Sempill. He was succeeded by his brother : —
(109) John Hamilton of Broomhill. Married Elizabeth, daughter and heiress
of Patrick Hamilton of Udston (No. 443, b), and widow of John Hamilton
of Nielsland (No. 318). They had issue : —
(a) Sir James (No. no).
(b) Claud Hamilton.
(c) David Hamilton.
