Blair.
Authorities — Scots Peerage and House of Hamilton.
(87) JOHN Hamilton, second natural son of James, first Earl of Arran (No. 8),
born about 15 10; hanged at Stirling, 7th April 1571. He became Bishop
of Dunkeld, 17th May 1544, and Archbishop of St. Andrews in June
1549. On 20th June 1546 he was legitimated. He was the author of a
Catechism printed in 1552 {Criminal Trials). Later he was captured by
the Protestant party and hanged as above. By Grizel Sempill, daughter
of Robert, Master of Sempill, he had : —
(a) William Hamilton of Drumry and Torry.
{b) John (No. 88).
(c) James (No. 92).
He had another son : —
{d) David Hamilton, legitimated 20th April 1580.
HrillS on detached Seal. — 1 and 4. A lymphad. 2 and 3. Three cinquefoils
(Macdonald). On Seal, 1552.-1 and 4. Three cinquefoils. 2 and 3. A
lymphad. MOTTO : " Misericordia et pax" (Laing).
(88) John Hamilton of Blair, near Culross. Will recorded nth May
1630 (Dunblane). He was father of: —
(89) William Hamilton of Blair, who married Elizabeth Drummond, and had
issue : —
(a) John (No. 90).
{b) William Hamilton of Lochmuck, Co. Down.
(90) JOHN Hamilton of Blair was retoured to his grandfather, John Hamilton,
in lands at Broughty Ferry, 1st November 1638. He sold Blair. He
married, first, Jean Fairney, and, second, Barbara Elphingstone, daughter
of James, first Lord Balmerino, and had issue: —
(91) REV. PETER HAMILTON (according to History of the House of Hamilton), or
JOHN HAMILTON (according to Scott's Fasti). John was Minister of
Cramond 1663, and in same year of South Leith, and in 168 1 of the
Tolbooth Church, Edinburgh. In 1686 he became Sub-Dean of the
Chapel Royal and Bishop of Dunkeld, and died s.p.
HnilS recorded in Lyon Office, 1680-87. — 1 and 4. Gules, three citiquefoils
ermitie. 2 and 3. Argent, a ship with her sails trussed up sable, all within
a bordure compony of eight pieces, argent and gules charged alternately with
a saltire and a buckle counter changed. [Plate II., fig. 16.] CREST: An
oaken plant proper. MOTTO : " Dum in arborem."

(92) JAMES Hamilton, said to be third son of John, Archbishop of St. Andrews
(No. 87). He is described as "of Coats" when he received a respite in
1550 {Great Seal). He is said to be father of:—
(93) Paul Hamilton of Coats, Captain of Arran, who had a charter of Coats,
Old Monkland, 31st December 1608. He married Margaret, daughter of
