(82) John Hamilton of Gilkerscleugh, died 1700. He married at Edinburgh,
9th August 1681, Catherine, daughter of James Hamilton of Westport,
and had issue : —
(a) James (No. 83).
(b) John Hamilton, died unmarried.
(c) Alexander Hamilton of Carolina, North America.
(d) Charles Hamilton of Spittlehaugh, Peebles, living 1740.
(83) James Hamilton of Gilkerscleugh, died 1770. Retoured to his father
29th April 1707. He married, first, Barbara Mitchell of Ledath, in Fife,
and had issue : —
(a) Alexander (No. 84).
(b) John Hamilton, died young.
He married, second, Henrietta, daughter of William Wood, Surgeon,
Edinburgh, who died s.p.
(84) Alexander Hamilton of Gilkerscleugh, died 25th September 1790
{Scots Magazine). Will recorded 10th January 1791 (Lanark). He
married his cousin, Helen MacQueen, and had : —
(a) James Hamilton, died young.
(b) Captain John Hamilton, died unmarried 1788.
(c) Daniel (No. 85).
(d) Robert Hamilton, Advocate. Married at Peebles, 27th
December 1804, Janet Hamilton, daughter of John
Anderson of Winterfield (Scots Magazine).
(e) Alexander Hamilton.
(f) Charles Hamilton, of Glasgow. Married Isabella, daughter
of John Campbell, of Glasgow, 20th October 1794 (Scots
Magazine), and had issue.
(g) Stirling Hamilton, died 1797.
(h) Thomas Hamilton, married Elizabeth, daughter of John
Parish, of Hamburg, and had issue.
(i) James Hamilton, W.S. Married Harriet Wynne, 12th
December 1807 (Scots Magazine).
(85) Daniel Hamilton of Gilkerscleugh, died 30th June 1823. He was
served heir to his brother, John, 14th February 1794. Married, 20th
December 1793, Harriet, daughter of Walter Campbell of Shawfield
(Scots Magazine). They had issue : —
(a) Alexander Henry Hamilton, R.N., died 1820.
(b) Walter (No. 86).
(c) John James Hamilton.
(d) George William Hamilton.
(e) Robert Ker Hamilton.
HrmS recorded in Lyon Office, 18 14. — Gules, three cinquefoils ermine within a
double tressure flory-counter-flory or. [Plate II., fig. 13.] CREST : Issuing
out of a ducal coronet or an oak tree fructed and ti'aversed by a frame saw,
all proper. SUPPORTERS : Two antelopes argent, armed and unguled or,
each gorged with a collar gules, charged with three cinquefoils aigent, with a
chain reflexed over its back of the second. MOTTOES : " Through " and
"In arduis fortitudo."
(86) Walter Hamilton of Gilkerscleugh. Retoured to his father 18th May
1824.
