(6) James Hamilton, fifth of Cadzow, died about 1440. He married Janet,
daughter of Alexander Livingstone of Callandar (but she may have been
his second wife). He had issue : —
(a) James (No. 7).
(b) Alexander, said to be ancestor of Hamilton of Silvertonhill
(No. 131).
(c) John, died before 1455, who had a charter of the lands of
Whitecamp and Kirkhope, 14th June 1449. He had
two sons : —

(d) Gavin, Provost of the Church of Bothwell. He left natural
sons. {See No. 176).
(7) James Hamilton, died 6th November 1479. On 3rd July 1445 his
lands were erected into a Lordship, and he was then created LORD
Hamilton. On 17th December 1453 he was granted the lands of
Elliestoun, Linlithgow, by his brother-in-law, the Earl of Strathearn.
On 23rd October 1455 he had a special charter of his lands, and the
following are mentioned in the remainder : —
(1) To James Hamilton, his natural son.
(2) To any other natural sons.
(3) To Alexander Hamilton, his brother.
(4) To William and Robert Hamilton, sons of his late brother,
John.
(5) To Thomas Hamilton, natural son of his brother, Gavin.
(6) To his nearest heirs bearing the name and Arms of Hamilton.
He married, first, about 1441, Euphemia, daughter of Patrick Graham,
Earl of Strathearn, and widow of Archibald, fifth Earl of Douglas. She
died about September 1468. He married, second, 1474, Mary Stewart,
daughter of King James II., and widow of Thomas Boyd, Earl of Arran,
who died in 1488. He had issue: —
(a) James (No. 8).
He also had the following natural children : —
(b) James Hamilton, named in the entail of 1455, died before
1473-
(c) John Hamilton of Broomhill (No. 107).
{d) Sir Patrick Hamilton of Kincavil (No. 127).
(e) David Hamilton, appointed Bishop of Argyll or Lismore
3rd April 1497. Died 1523.

On Seal, 1477. — Three cinquefoils. CREST : A tree, the horns of the dexter
supporter doing duty as a saw. SUPPORTERS : Two antelopes with pennons
behind them bearing arms — Dexter, On a chief two stars ; Sinister, Three
boars' heads (Macdonald).
(8) JAMES, second Lord Hamilton, born about 1475 ; died 26th March 1529.
On 8th August 1503 he was created Earl OF Arran, and on 30th April
1520 he and his followers were defeated by the Douglases at the battle
called " Cleanse the Causeway "in Edinburgh. He married, first, Eliza-
beth, daughter of Alexander, second Lord Home, but divorced her about
