many honours they hold to-day testify. Their proudest boast may well be that they
were " the loyalest when nearest to the throne."
I shall now pass on to the true history of the Hamiltons, so far as our present
knowledge extends.
Authority — Scots Peerage.
(i) Gilbert, of whom nothing is known except that he was father of: —
(2) Sir Walter Fitz Gilbert de Hameldone, died before 1346, whose name
appears in the Ragman Roll of 1296. In 1314 he was Captain of
Bothwell Castle for the English, but after Bannockburn he surrendered
the castle to Robert Bruce, and was rewarded with the lands of Machan
(Dalserf), which had belonged to John Comyn. At a later date he also
received the lands of Cadzow, Kinneil, Lambert, and Auldcathy. He
married, first, Helen , and, second, Mary Gordon, supposed to be a
daughter of Sir Adam Gordon of that Ilk. He had issue : —
(a) David Fitz Walter (No. 3).
(b) John Fitz Walter, ancestor of the Hamiltons of Innerwick
(No. 570).
(3) Sir David Fitz Walter, second of Cadzow, died about 1376. Taken
prisoner at battle of Neville's Cross, 1346 ; founded chaplainry in Glasgow
Cathedral, 1361. He is said to have married a daughter of the Earl of
Ross, by whom he had the following sons : —
(a) David (No. 4).
(b) Sir John Hamilton of Fingaltoun, ancestor of the Hamiltons
of Preston (No. 513).
And possibly : —
(c) Walter Hamilton, said to be ancestor of the Hamiltons of
Cambuskeith and Sanquhar (No. 545).
(d) Alan Hamilton of Larbert.
HnH0 on Seal, 1371. — Three cinquefoils (Laing).
(4) David Hamilton, third of Cadzow, died about 1385. He was the first to
adopt the surname of Hamilton. He married Janet, daughter of Sir
William Keith of Galston, who survived him and re-married. They had
issue : —
(a) John (No. 5).
(b) Sir William, ancestor of the Hamiltons of Bathgate (No.
434)-
(c) Andrew, said to be ancestor of the Hamiltons of Udston
(No. 442).
(d) John (second), ancestor of Hamilton of Bardowie (No. 470).
And possibly : —
(e) George, said to be ancestor of Hamilton of Borland (No. 484).
(5) SIR John Hamilton, fourth OF Cadzow, may have been killed at battle
of Homildon, 14th September 1402. He married, about 1388, Jacoba,
daughter of Sir James Douglas of Dalkeith, and had issue : —
(a) James (No. 6).
(b) David, said to be ancestor of Hamilton of Dalserf (No. 233).
(c) Walter, probably ancestor of Hamilton of Raploch (No. 241).
