died September 1574. After his marriage he was recognised as Master
of Morton, and succeeded to the Earldom on the death of his father-in-
law in 1553. In 1564 his right to the Earldom of Morton was confirmed
by a grant, with the following remainders : —
I. To himself and the heirs male of his body. (As he had no legitimate son
this clause failed.)
II. To his nephew, Archibald, eighth Earl of Angus. (He succeeded as sixth
Earl of Morton.)
III. To William Douglas of Lochleven. (He succeeded as seventh Earl of
Morton, No. 325).
IV. To Francis Douglas of Longniddry.
V. To William Douglas of Whittingham.
VI. To William Douglas, son of Richard Douglas, brother of James, third Earl
of Morton.
VII. To James Douglas, brother of William (No. VI.)
VIII. To nearest legitimate male heir of the fourth Earl of Morton.
He was Chancellor of Scotland 1562-67, and 1567-72. He took a
leading part in the murder of Rizzio, 1566. Regent of Scotland 1572-78.
He was found guilty of being concerned in the murder of Lord Darnley,
and executed 2nd June 1 58 1 , without legitimate issue. He had, however,
four natural sons : —
(a) James (No. 125).
(b) Archibald Douglas of Pittendreich, who married Elizabeth,
daughter of William Sutherland of Duffus.
(c) George Douglas, a cripple, living 161 1.
(d) William Douglas.

CREST : A peacock's head (Laing). On Seal, 1560. — 1 and 4. On a chief
two stars (Douglas of Morton). 2 and 3. A heart, on a chief three stars
(Douglas of Pittendreich). CREST : A boar passant in front of a tree.

Spott.
(125) Sir James Douglas, lay Prior of Pluscarden, knighted about 1607.
He married Anna, only daughter of George Home of Spott. He is men-
tioned in the Acts of Parliament, 1592, and in the Privy Council Register,
1586-1613.
Hl'lU0 on Seal, 1576. — A heart surmounted by a bend sinister, on a chief three
stars (Macdonald).
He had a son : —
(126) Sir Archibald Douglas of Spott, retoured to his father 161 5. He is
mentioned in the Great Seal Register, 1620. His Will recorded Edin-
burgh 1647.
HrVNS on Seal, 1616. — A heart, on a chief three stars (Laing). In Fraser's
"Funeral Escutcheons " the Arms are given as — 1 and 4. A heart, on a
chief three stars. 2 and 3. Three piles, in chief two stars. En surtout, A
lion rampant, on a chief three stars (? Fairlie).
His son : —
(127) Archibald Douglas of Spott, was retoured to his father 1647, and Sir
Robert Douglas of Makerstoune is named as his tutor, 1658 {Great Seal
Register). His son : —
(128) Alexander Douglas, was retoured to his father 1672.
