BOXING

Stage II
This is the training proper. The change from Stage I to Stage
II is obviously a matter for the trainer to decide, and it depends on
the rate at which the team is getting fit.
Road Work. Road work should now gradually be increased
until at the end of this stage about one hour is spent on the road.
Care should be taken to vary the route taken—one need not neces-
sarily stay on a road—to avoid monotony. The timed bursts of fast
work drop back from
7
of one minute which occurred on the last day
of the first stage to 3 of
2
minutes. These rounds are then daily
increased up to 7 of z minutes. Then a drop back to 3 of 3 minutes
which is systematically worked up to 5 or 6 of 3 minutes. A
pleasant change which helps to break monotony is once or twice in
this stage to substitute for road work an ordinary walk of 7 or 8 miles.
All fast work should be done at top speed. A quick bath or shower
should always be taken to wash off the sweat and dust, followed by a
rub down or a light massage.
Gymnasium Work.—The work done in the gym. is similar to
that described for Stage I, except that a fifth " group " is added.
This is actual boxing which should, if possible, be done in a ring of
proper dimensions with a canvas floor.
Work is carried out in the same way, but those who do not require,
or cannot stand, the full evening's training come into the ring to box
whilst the other group carry on the normal routine. The time
spent in each " ring " is increased to
2
minutes and then 3 minutes,
on the same days that the trainer switches over from r to
2,
and z to
3 minute bursts on the road work.
After the quickening exercises the team splits up for boxing, as
is described under section D.
The evening's programme should be completed with some
suppling exercises, a rub down or massage, followed by weighing.
Stage III
All road and gymnasium training should ease up. Road work
should become ordinary walking, and no boxing should be donr.
for the last
2
days before the fighting. Rounds with a punch-pad
should be continued to give practice in speed and power of punch
without risk of damage to the hands.
During all three stages it is advisable to cut out work on Sundays,
except, perhaps, a short walk in the morning. This makes a very
welcome break for the men in training.
D.—NOTES ON GYMNASIUM TRAINING
Skipping
Work fast and vary footwork and ropework so as to avoid making
it mechanical and monotonous. Any variation, such as crossing
rope--" speeding up "—" slowing down," is beneficial, and always
