ATHLETICS 207
3. The following is intended as a guide and should be varied to
suit the requirements of the team or individual. Emphasis should
be on
"All the year round "
training, and the preceding chart will be
an aid to the fulfilment of this aim.
This has been designed to suit the activities of the average
service athlete who will confine his main competitions into the
three month period June—August, but for the more enterprising
athletes, and in particular international aspirants, the competitive
season has to be extended over a much longer period, in fact some
athletes maintain a high competitive standard for as long as eight
months, March—October.
No matter what the competitive demands are, athletic efficiency
can only be attained through the acquiring of what may be called
the " S " Fitness.

modicum of athletic success.

General fitness training, Cross-Country, Weight Training.
Practising of specialised exercises and techniques peculiar to the
specific event or events.

more speed than stamina but this must not be ignored. More
emphasis on form and technique (Skill).
(c) Early Season.
At this stage all major faults should have been corrected. Final
corrections of technique and build up to peak condition. Particular
study of personal requirements, e.g., final touches to perfect " run-
up," ideal method of " warming up " etc.
(d) Middle Season (Competitive).
Slight easing of intense training schedule, maintaining condition,
analysing previous week's competition performances, particular note
of good and bad points.
(e) Late Season.
This will depend very largely upon
(i) Standard of technique and performance.
(ii) Competition requirements.
Note.—Post
Mortem of work schedules for each week of training
during the various stages should be held without fail, with instructor
or coach.
