Competitors' Costumes
6o. Competitors in events held under A.S.A. Laws before
audiences of both sexes shall wear :
Males. Either (a) swimming costumes with drawers or
slips
underneath ; or (b) swimming trunks with drawers or slips under-
neath, provided the wearing of trunks is sanctioned by the bath
authority concerned.
Females. Swimming costumes of one piece devoid of open
work, excepting at the back. Fastenings, if any, shall be on the
shoulders.
The textures of all swimming costumes and trunks shall be non-
transparent.
Breast Stroke Swimming
61. (a) Both hands must be moved forward together and brought
backward simultaneously.
(b) The body must be kept perfectly on the breast, and both
shoulders in line with the surface of the water.
(c) The feet shall be drawn up together, the knees bent and
open. The movement shall be continued with a rounded
and outward sweep of the feet, bringing the legs together.
Up and down movements of the legs in the vertical plane
are prohibited.
(d)
When touching at the turn, or on finishing a race, the touch
shall be made with both hands simultaneously, with
shoulders in horizontal position.
(e)
Any competitor introducing a sidestroke movement shall
be disqualified.
(f) A swimmer must swim, when on the surface, either
orthodox (conventional) breast stroke or butterfly stroke
throughout the race. These strokes must not be alternated.
Heats and finals are considered separate races.
Back Stroke Swimming
62. (a) Competitors shall line up in the water facing the starting
end, with both hands resting on the end or rail of the bath
or course.
(b) At the word " Go," they shall push off and swim upon
their backs throughout the race, except at the moment of
turning and finishing.
