| Description | Signal box in ruins, Western Front, during World War I. Two soldiers digging out the rubble of a railway signal box. As the original caption notes, the levers and chains of the mechanism remain intact. It would appear that these men are clearing the rubble to reinstate the signal box. The railways were of great importance in the movement of troops, supplies, and ammunition towards the Front and the movement of wounded away from the Front. They were therefore an important target for both sides in the conflict. [Original reads: 'Effect of shell fire. All brick work of this Signal Box has disappeared though the levers have not been touched.'] |
