| Description | Men and their officers resting on their way to the trenches. Some are sitting on what appear to be corrugated sections from a Nissen hut. The area is desolate with a shell hole in the foreground and blasted trees behind. One man in the centre is grinning broadly and another at the back is waving his helmet at the camera, but the majority are looking strained and introspective. Even when there was no offensive, life in the trenches was dangerous as well as extremely uncomfortable. [Original reads: 'A roadside halt on the way to the trenches.'] |
