| Description | A laughing young soldier who has clearly just washed his hair with the muddy water from a puddle that has collected in the bottom of a shell hole. The light hearted image does not show the reality that the water was liable to be polluted with corpses, sewage and rubbish. To view this scene in perspective, it is worth remembering that at this period, many rural households in Britain had no inside water, and even middle-class households were accustomed to wash at a china basin with a jug of, often cold, water.
