| Description | Royal Scots Greys entering a village, France, during World War I. This photograph shows a long line of cavalry riding past tall brick-built farm buildings. The horses are reflected in the river in the foreground. The soldiers are riding in full kit and wearing their steel helmets. Their rifles are lodged in sheaths behind each rider's right leg. Two baggage horses are being led by mounted men. All the horses are greys, a tradition with the Royal Scots Greys from 1694, when the whole regiment was mounted on greys for the first time. The 'Royal Scots Greys' became their unofficial name for many years until they were given the title officially in 1921.
