| Description | This train is being loaded with bales of hay. Whilst most attention was focused on getting food supplies to the men at the Front, it is important to remember that the horses and mules stationed there also needed a constant supply of food. Horses were heavily replied upon, not only by the cavalry but for transportation purposes, and therefore needed to be strong and healthy. 'Tommy’ entered into general usage after the Rudyard Kipling poems, 'Tommy’ and 'To Thomas Atkins’ (1892), which pay homage to the sturdy character of the average British soldier.
