| Description | Whilst this image is shocking, sadly it was an all too familiar sight during the four years of fighting. Countless towns and villages along the Western Front suffered similar levels of devastation. This particular scene is made all the more poignant by the everyday objects scattered amidst the piles of rubble - a reminder of the lives that were once lived here. It is estimated that around 300,000 French houses and 6,000 French factories were destroyed during the war. The extent of damage to French farm land was also extensive, with approximately 8,000 square miles of land laid to waste and well over one million animals lost.
