| Description | Like some traditional winter scene on a Christmas card, this photograph captures a snowball fight between two 'Tommies' and a group of laughing French schoolchildren. Given the manner in which the Germans were demonised for committing all manner of atrocities when invading Belgium and France, photographs such as these had significant propaganda value. Adverse weather conditions would have been no laughing matter in the front line - especially when the soldiers recalled how the 'experts' told them 'it would all be over by Christmas.'] Though weather conditions on the Western Front were nothing like as bad as those experienced on the Eastern Front, the primitive level of existence in the trenches meant that the weather had far more effect than it would normally have done.
