| Description | Young children taking part in a race, at a Black Watch sports day. The winner has touched the finishing line, with the rest of the runners in hot pursuit! These children were very likely from a nearby village or town. Members of the Black Watch look on and smile. 'Tommy’ is 'Tommy Atkins’, a fictional hero figure representing the average British soldier. Coming into contact with civilians while serving at the Western Front, probably brought thoughts of home and family to the fore for many men.
