| Description | Members of the Newfoundland Regiment, France - all of whom received decorations and who alone held the village of Monchy against a heavy counter attack. This is a group photograph of the officers and men of the Newfoundland Regiment who were responsible for defending the small French village of Monchy-le-Preux. They all received decorations in recognition of their bravery. A bronze caribou (the emblem of the Regiment) now stands in Monchy-le-Preux as a memorial to the men of the Newfoundland Regiment. During the Battle of Arras, April-May 1917, Monchy-le-Preux was successfully defended from German counter-attacks by a small band of Newfoundlanders - the rest having been killed or wounded.
