| Description | King George V, standing at the far right of the shot, watching a display by members of the infantry. The event is taking place in a large grassy field bordered by trees. A long line of soldiers make their way across the field, carrying their rifles across their chests. All of the men are in uniform and are wearing steel helmets. In the background, another line of infantrymen await their turn to move forward. John Warwick Brooke is believed to have taken this photograph. During visits to the Western Front, members of royalty often took part in formal presentations and inspections. They were also treated to displays, such as the one shown here. It was an opportunity for the men to show off their skill and training. [Original reads: 'THE KING VISITS THE WESTERN FRONT. H.M. watching a display by the infantry.'] |
